Important information

After PRK surgery

  1. On the operating table, the doctor will place a contact lens on the eye that was operated on. The lens will remain in place for at least two days.
  2. On the third day, you will have to visit the doctor who performed the surgery to have the contact lens removed from the eye. If you have been wearing contact lenses before and know how to remove them, you can do it yourself and throw the lens away. In such a case you do not need to visit the doctor on the third day after the surgery.
  3. Your eye will not start to ache immediately after leaving our eye clinic after the surgery. First signs of discomfort in the eye usually appear after 2–3 hours.
  4. You will have to start using anti-inflammatory eye drops (Sol. Ciloxan or Sol. Tobrex 2) 4 times a day from the day of the surgery (unless instructed otherwise by the doctor).
  5. In parallel with the anti-inflammatory eye drops, you will also be required to use artificial tears (Systane). These eye drops can be applied an unlimited number of times, but it is recommended to apply them at least 5 times a day.
  6. Since the eye is very sensitive to light in the first 2–3 days and excessive tear flow occurs, it is recommended to wear dark sunglasses even at home.
  7. We also recommend using analgesic pills (Paracetamol, Solpadein or Ibumetin) to alleviate the uncomfortable pain. These pills should not be used excessively and it is not recommended to administer the pills more than 4 times a day.
  8. If you have trouble sleeping, you can administer soporific drugs for the night (Imovane – attention, this medication may leave a metallic aftertaste in your mouth!).
  9. From the fourth day after the surgery, the doctor changes the treatment scheme and prescribes anti-inflammatory eye drops, which contain cortisone (Sol. Maxidex, Sol. Lotemax). The eye drops must be administered 5 times a day for the first week and 4 times a day from the second week. Further course of the treatment will be determined by the doctor according to need. It is necessary to keep using such eye drops for at least 1 month.
  10. Artificial tears must also be administered for at least 1 month in parallel with anti-inflammatory eye drops.
  11. When the first week after the surgery has passed, you will be allowed to run all your everyday errands, but you have to keep in mind that your visual acuity has not recovered 100%. Seeing objects close by and the computer screen may be especially problematic at first. Thus your work schedule and the duration of this period should be taken into consideration.
  12. It is not allowed to use the sauna, swimming pool or tanning bed within one month.
  13. Physical activities that require moderate effort are allowed.
